Morrow Mountain State Park

You can be at this state park in Albemarle within an hour’s drive from Salisbury. Morrow Mountain State Park features 19 miles of horseback riding trails and 37 miles of hiking trails, so you can thoroughly explore this mountainous region of NC. You can also learn about local history at the park museum, open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional park amenities include a boat ramp, bathhouse, and picnic pavilions.

If you visit during the summer, you can rent a boat, swim in the park pool, or grab snacks at the concession stand. Morrow Mountain State Park is located at 49104 Morrow Mountain Rd. It’s open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for day visitors, or you can reserve a spot in one of the park’s tent sites, RV sites, or cabins.

Hanging Rock State Park

This state park is about an hour and 15 minutes north of Salisbury in Danbury. Hanging Rock State Park, constructed as a project of the Civilian Conservation Corps, is a popular spot for mountain climbing, biking, and horseback riding. You can swim in the lake, camp for the weekend, or paddle along the Dan River. Hanging Rock State Park is also an access point for NC’s Mountains-to-Sea State Trail.

While you’re here, enjoy a picnic in the covered pavilions, try your luck with a fishing pole, and check out the historical exhibits in the visitor’s center. To get to the park, head to 1790 Hanging Rock Park Rd. It’s open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

New River State Park

Located in Laurel Springs about 2 hours from Salisbury, New River State Park provides a peaceful setting along a designated National Wild and Scenic River. You’ll find tent and RV campsites, 9 miles of hiking trails, picnic shelters, and a visitor’s center. The park also has seven access points to the New River, where you can fish, paddle, or just float on an inner tube.

You might glimpse the local animal life, which includes the country’s largest salamander species. The New River region is home to more than a dozen endangered plant species as well. New River State Park is located at 358 New River State Park Rd. It’s open to visitors seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
